Large eddy simulation at Urban NEighborhood Scale

LUNES is a project oriented to the development of an innovative numerical tool for the air quality analysis at urban neighborhood scale, considering significant sources of pollution. Air mixing in the atmospheric boundary layer rules dispersion phenomena for pollutants, in particular for urban areas characterized by complex topography and geometries (buildings). A proper reproduction of these dynamics is fundamental for a correct prediction of time space evolution of pollutant concentration, in order to obtain useful information to evaluate their possible impact on people. IEFLUIDS S.r.l. and University of Trieste have developed a model that address these requirements. The numerical code is a three dimensional Navier Stokes solver, it uses large eddy simulation for turbulent treatment, and the immersed boundary method to deal with complex geometries. The project purpose is to made this model operative for short term / short range analysis at urban scale.
