Italian leadership in nutraceuticals: excellence and opportunities for growth
Functional foods are products of the food industry that possess proven physiological benefits that go beyond their nutritional role thanks to their natural enrichment in specific beneficial active ingredients. Food supplements are products developed by the pharmaceutical industry that contain active nutritional ingredients derived from food, in the form of pills, capsules or sachets. Both products can be classified as "nutraceuticals", a term created in 1989 by Joseph De Felice to understand a symbiosis between nutrition and pharmaceuticals.
Nutraceuticals represent a new consumer sector in which the Italian pharmaceutical industry and the food industry are investing heavily to provide effective solutions for improving health or reducing the risk of disease through prevention. In this sector, Italy is second only to the United States in terms of scientific production and can boast an enlightened vision that does not limit itself to considering food supplements as nutraceutical but enhances the natural constituents of our quality regional foods and boasts extraordinary development potential, both for the presence of numerous natural products and for the industry's ability to formulate very pleasant and potentially effective products.
