The investigations of the Cell and Developmental Neurobiology lab at the University of Trieste (Department of Life Sciences), founded in 2000, are focused on the atrophy of neurons present in neurological disorders including genetic diseases affecting neuronal development, neuropsychiatric disorders, and the major neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. In particular, we study the mechanisms of neuronal atrophy and the protective role of neurotrophic growth factors such as Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF).

The Medical Genetics group is engaged in performing genetic/genomic analyses to the aim of identification molecular bases human diseases. The group utilizes different technological approaches: conventional cytogenetics and FISH, STR analysis, MLPA, allelic discrimination by quantitative PCR, analysis of genomic imbalances through microarrays. In addition, the group investigates mechanisms of regulation of gene expression (by using real-time PCR and RNA-seq) as well epigenetic mechanisms (by using ChIP-seq).

The Molecular Oncology research group is part of the Department of Translational Research CRO Aviano and its main objective is the development of new therapies for cancer  treatment, mainly through the study of cancer-host interactions.

The translational approach of our research projects aims to improve the understanding of the biology of cancer and to transfer these discoveries to the clinic, developing personalized treatments (precision medicine).
