SmartHealth Technological development Trajectories: 
Ambient Assisted Living (AAL)

The research group combines multidisciplinary competences in the clinical, public health, health care, engineering and architecture fields.

The group offers competences in the areas of

  • evaluation through epidemiological studies capable of estimating the current and the potential need for AAL solutions in the regional context;
  • identification of minimum requirements/minimum accessibility necessary for people with different degrees of disability/limitations that might be physical, cognitive and/or sensory;
  • evaluation of risks and current residential solutions (e.g. occurrence of falls) and of effects – also on quality of life – of created and tested technological options (Health Technology Assessment);
  • design of monitoring systems of accidents/difficulties for persons with disabilities in the home context and critical analysis of factors determining future innovative solutions;
  • design of training and information systems also over long distances, for groups of persons with health conditions risking potential deterioration, in order to  evaluate physical capabilities and food habits so as to adjust them to promote healthy lifestyles;
  • encourage individuals to maintain and promote residual and potential functional abilities;
  • development support for ITC applications (AAL systems, e-learning, Human-computer interaction, artificial vision, etc.)
  • support for the identification of proper solutions to guarantee the maximum independence possible – and over the longer term – for young persons, adults and the elderly with health problems that limit their independence in basic and instrumental activities with particular reference to the following environments:
    • autonomous assumption of medications that require compliance (e.g. oral anti-coagulants after major orthopaedic surgery),
    • sensory disturbances (with particular reference to those that are visual) that limit autonomy in the home for individuals (e.g. visually impaired diabetic elderly persons, subjects affected by maculopathy);
    • independence in temporary daily living activities or those permanently compromised;
  • architectural and technological design of environments with performance adequate to satisfy specific requirements for public context accessibility classes, environments open to the public and private persons, of a domestic or residential character and for persons with different degrees of physical, cognitive or sensory disabilities;
  • definitions of environmental solutions for different project scales (urban scale, building and industrial design).
  • performance of feasibility tests to evaluate the effects of the innovative solutions proposed in simulated contexts (simulation and advanced training centres).
